Chapter 14

Love potion? The Woodsman gave the bottle a dubious glance, then realized everyone was watching him with an excited, expectant glint in their eyes. By the Light, did they think he would turn into a frantic, slobbering beast, ready to pounce on Sorcha at any second?

Or did they expect her to pounce on him? That last thought was rather appealing, actually, but one look at her mortified expression and he knew it was not going to happen.

He cleared his throat and addressed the crowd. “There’s nothing to see here. Please continue to enjoy the feast.” He smiled at Tara and her mother, who both had tears in their eyes. “No need to worry. We’re perfectly fine. Please go on with what you were doing.”

“Yes, my lord.” Teresa curtsied and nudged her daughter to do the same. “Thank you, my lord.” She rushed toward the center table and grabbed two plates of ham, carrots, and peas, then brought them to the Woodsman and Sorcha. “My apologies again. Please enjoy.”

“Thank you.” The Woodsman ignored the brass goblets and poured wine into the two wooden cups. “The wine is not tainted, I take it?” he asked Father Kit, who sat to his right.

“No, the wine is good. I filled the pitchers myself.” The priest lowered his voice. “Are you feeling all right?”

“Of course.” The Woodsman drank some wine. Why was everyone still watching him? “Here. Have a drink.” He offered a filled cup to Sorcha.

With her hands clutched tightly together, she gave him a wary look.

He leaned close to whisper. “I’m not going to succumb to beastlike urges and jump on you.”

Her eyes widened. “Are you sure?”

“Are you disappointed?”

“Are you mad?” She ripped the cup from his hands and downed the contents.

He couldn’t help but watch her. With her head tilted back, the graceful line of her neck was a beautiful sight. She was guzzling down the wine so quickly, though, that a drop escaped and rolled down her chin, a rich red claret against her pale skin. A sudden urge struck him hard, enticing him to lick the drop away.

His nerves tensed. Damn, was this a reaction to the love potion? No, he shook himself mentally. He refused to believe in such nonsense. The potion wasn’t real. Unfortunately, he couldn’t say the same for the stirring in his groin.

“Both of you should drink as much as you can,” Morghen told them. “So you can dilute the effect.”

“I will. Right away.” Sorcha refilled their cups, then gulped down more wine.

Was she afraid of him? The Woodsman sighed. “Relax, Sorcha. Nothing is going to happen.”

“How can you say that?” she whispered. “The facts are clear. We drank the potion. Quite a bit of it, and it’s extremely potent. Morghen said so, and I don’t doubt her abilities.”

“When it comes to healing, I have complete confidence in her. But a love potion?” He shook his head. “It’s not possible.”

“It is!” She finished her cup, then refilled it. “The last five couples who took this potion all ended up married within a month.
